Artist Residency, Boise Idaho

Happy New Year 2010

I’m currently making new work as a resident artist of Boise, Idaho’s 8th Street Air Program. This 3-month program is awarded through the Dept of Arts & History. It gives artists space to work in downtown. Its been a fantastic opportunity. It has supplied space and time to re-evaluate the direction of my work and start new projects. I am taking part in 1st Thursday open studios to stage performances. I’ve invited other artist to participate in performances and have begun a series of  workshops and collaborations (the 1st class was a book-binding class taught by Justinian Morton)

I have been painting and drawing, sewing soft  sculpture and props, and experimenting with new props for performance. Although my ideas feel like familiar themes- ( the visceral experience of alienation- inspired by animals and creatures), some events I experienced* ( a change in my physical circumstances, and relocation from East Bay to Boise ) have affected the process, the medium, and what it means to me to be working right now.

Artists and interested people, especially potential collaborators and those with an idea for a workshop, should email me and come to open studios 1st Thursday of the month.

*1 year ago a nasty struggle with a reoccuring MRSA infection forced me to take some physical downtime from touring and dancing- which was my livelihood.  A friend moved me to Boise to heal, to live cheaper, to live with less stairs, and to train a service dog.

New Podcast online – Design Squad show airs in California

Below, the 4th episode of Morphology is here:
morphology.www.lisabufano.com

The underwater prosthetic was created by the young engineers of Design Squad in July, 2007. DESIGN SQUAD, a kids’ competition reality engineering produced by WGBH in Boston invited me to offer an engineering challenge for the 2nd season of their show. I challenged the kids to make underwater prosthetics that took their inspiration from sea creatures. I created a podcast with the winning design. The episode (2nd season, episode 5) will air in California:

Sun 05/18 at 08:00am KVIE (PBS affiliate station serving Northern & Central CA, Channel 6)
Fri 06/20 at 3:30pm on KTEH (PBS affiliate station serving San Jose & SF Bay Area, Channel 54)

Axis Review Online

Axis brings complex dance to Tallahassee

Excerpt:

It isn’t every day you watch a dancer with metallic, prosthetic legs perform a duet to a mournful country ballad by Gillian Welch, but the Axis Dance Company is not your typical dance company.

Axis rolled, jumped, crawled, piggy-backed and gracefully waltzed its way into town on Monday night as part of the Seven Days of Opening Nights arts festival. Several of the dancers were in wheelchairs, some were able-bodied and the rather amazing Lisa Bufano danced with and without her artificial legs.
